Importance of Memory in Learning and Education
Often people confuse memory and learning with each other since both these are so closely associated to each other. However, according to specialists, both these are two different phenomena. As per the experts, learning is a process that modifies a particular behavior while memory is the ability to remember previous experiences. For example, you learn a language; but to speak and write in that language, you use your memory to recollect the words and grammar that you have learned.
Memory is necessary for learning because it enables you to store and regain the information you have learned. Basically memory is nothing but a record of your learning process. So, memory is dependent on learning. But in turn learning is also dependent on memory since it provides the support for the new knowledge.
In general, memory can be divided into two types – short term and long term. The short-term memory works like a computer’s RAM. Information lasts for only 3 to 20 seconds in short term memory, and it has only a limited capacity of up to 7 pieces of information. For example, to remember a mobile number, we divide it into groups like 07871 – 500 – 293 and once we have dialed it, we forget it. Short term memory is also adversely affected by interference. Thus, if you hear or read something while there is a lot of noise around, you tend to forget it.
On the other hand, long term memory can store information for a lifetime and has an unlimited capacity. So, if you want to learn a subject thoroughly, secret is to transfer whatever you learn about that subject to long term memory. It is not necessary that the longer a type of information is stored in your short term memory, the more likely it is to enter your long term memory. Actually, transferring information from short term to long term memory requires organization, and connecting and consolidating information in networks called schemas and in the process, the emotional content ad meaningfulness of a matter has an important role. In the absence of a trigger to remember a new thing, it simply vanishes from our short-term memory and is forgotten.
Role of Memory in Education
Students should not only be encouraged to adopt new learning strategies that will help their memory, but also a careful consideration should be given to materials and techniques that are employed in class. Teachers can think on adding to the materials before the students to make the subject memorable. Just working on the exercises in course-books and providing answers won’t make the lessons stick to the minds of students.
