IB Diploma in China – A Great Help to Get Enrolled to World’s Topmost Universities

A researchers’ team from the University of Hong Kong has thrown light on the university destinations and “preparation” of students graduated from International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools in China from 2002 to 2012.

Utilizing destination records of 1,612 students who attended fourteen IB World Schools within this period, the researchers observed that the highest number of students (71.6%) attended one of the top 500 universities in the world as ranked by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

From those IB graduates who didn’t attend one of the top 500, several opted for attending one of the top 200 liberal arts colleges instead, the majority of whom attended a liberal arts college ranking in the top 50 in the world, whereas a small proportion of students chose to attend a specialized college or university. In general, most IB graduates in the group attended academically strong institutions or internationally well-known universities. Check wellingtoncollege for their IBD programme.

It was found in a study of China’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, that effect on students’ preparation for foreign university studies required to recognize patterns in university destinations of those students who graduated from the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in China. Most were from Asia but not from China. Over 61% of the group preferred to attend a university in North America, while 51% of the graduates chose a United States university.

A correlation between acceptance of DP students at top ranked universities and higher DP scores, after controlling for family background was found by the researchers. A higher DP score was seen to be a strong determinant of university grade point average, pointing to the fact that higher performance in the DP is positively related to academic achievements at university in the initial two years.

The outcomes of the study in China have confirmed what has been learned anecdotally and it’s that IB students are prepared well for university studies. Students of IB Diploma Programme have high aims, are welcomed by top-ranking universities and usually accredit their IB studies for their success.

Focus groups and interviews of administrators and teachers showed their belief that DP students may have faced less challenge in their university studies because of their hard work in the DP. Qualitative and quantitative results ensured the importance of the IB learner profile in facilitating skills like effective communication and critical thinking.

Here is a short cross-section of the qualitative findings of the study from students and educators:

  • It’s believed unanimously by administrators as well as teachers that the three key components of the DP bring about a smooth transition to higher education: the extended essay makes students ready for research and writing; the CAS (creativity, activity, service) component that focuses on volunteer activity balances academic studies of students; and the theory of knowledge course promotes maturity and cognitive development.
  • Students consider the extended essay to be an extremely important initial experience in researching and writing an academic essay. Moreover, students revealed that they were confident for university study by gaining time-management skills before arrival.
  • Administrators and teachers cited the thoroughness and breadth of the DP curriculum as outstanding preparation for enrolling to a top ranked university.

Check wellingtoncollege where the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is provided for their sixth form students (12 and 13 years). All the sixth formers are required to study 6 subjects taken from six groups, with three taken to the higher level. Since the IBDP is a lot more than just a series of academic subjects, the IBDP elements act as a platform for their students to gain higher personal and academic growth during the sixth form.

With these things in mind, consider choosing IBDP in China which will be a great help to your child to get enrolled for world’s topmost universities.
