Circulus de Potentia – Learn Math Without Even Knowing it

If you have a middle-grader who likes magic and adventure, and yet you want your child to learn something from books, I have something incredible to recommend you. Circulus de Potentia, from the Magicae Mathematicae series by Jim West. Simply put, this book creates magic from math and your kids will love it!

Alex, the heroine of the first installment, together with her friends continues the adventure right where it stopped in the first volume. While displaying courage, maturity and ingenuity, Alex and her friends will also show readers all the potentials and benefits associated with the knowledge of math. Although Jim West, the author, doesn’t insist on readers to know neither math nor Latin, they will surely pick up some Latin from the spells used by Archimedes’ students (who are also characters displayed in this lovely book) and they’ll learn equations for determining square roots and volume. Basically, Jim West shows us how math lessons can be cleverly mixed into the story, so that you learn important things without even knowing it.

The message of female empowerment and gender equality is so strong in this book. Adventure, math, knowledge and magic are not reserved only for boys; girls can be quite good and successful at science and they should embrace that fact. After the well received first installment in the series, Circulus de Potentia is a worthy sequel, a fast-paced novel that will surely inspire young readers to gain knowledge and read more.  We’re looking forward to reading the next book in the Magicae Mathematicae series by Jim West.
