Alabama State University was established in 1867, in Marion, Ala., as a college for African-Americans. The university started as the Lincoln subsequently Regular University with $500 brought up by nine released slaves now known as the Marion Nine, making ASU one of the nation’s oldest institutions of college established for black People in america.
