Don’t Memorize, but Understand
When upon many efforts you don’t understand a thing, you are prone to memorize it. In case of a math procedure too you are inclined to do the same. Try to overcome the habit by trying hard to understand the procedure or sequence of steps. E.g. if the question is 71 divided by 5, we typically think upon how many times 5 goes into 7. Actually the thing you should understand in this problem has little to do with how many times does 5 go into 7. In reality, what you should understand is how many are in the group of 5 when you share 71 into 5 groups. Here 5 going into 7 is just a shortcut while putting 71 into 5 groups is understanding.
Math is Something You Should Do, and Not Just Watch
Unlike many other subjects, math is understood well, when you do it and not just watch it. This is a subject which takes you out of comfort zone (possibly this is the reason it is an unpopular subject). But you need not worry, as this is a part of the learning process. Try to connect concepts since many math concepts are connected to each other and more you find them, the more you will understand the subject. These concepts run through levels of difficulty. You need to start from wherever you are and move further to more complicated levels only upon understanding the previous ones. Practice will Make You Perfect
Go on doing as many problems as is necessary to make sure you understand the basic concept. Some of us will need more practice while some others will require less of it. Practice until you can solve the concerned problem smoothly. When you are able to get 7 different questions correct in a row, you have probably achieved the point of understanding. You can now solve the problem easily even if you come to it after some months.
