Useful Tips for Choosing a Driving School for Your Teenager

Education and training of driving can be acquired in a public or private regular school or driving school approved by the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). Setting the curriculum for DE (Driver Education) and DT (Driver Training) is the responsibility of the Dept. of Education which is then implemented by the schools. Driving schools licensed for giving DE/DT should get their curriculum approved from the DMV before obtaining a license.

You want the best training for your teenager; so, good communication between the student, her/his parents and the instructor is extremely necessary. Here are some questions parents should ask the instructor or driving school.

It has been observed that teenage drivers undergo more incidences of getting tickets, getting hurt and accidental death than other drivers. Therefore you should ensure that the driving school trains your teenager with due safety.

Movies/Videos

Driving schools should provide minimum 100 minutes of viewing movie and videos on driving. The videos should be related to the education program and should ideally consist of graphics of traffic accidents. If you will be sending your child to her/his secondary school for driver’s training, you should ensure this with the school.

Duration

Duration of driver’s training depends on for how long your child attends the class and spends time on educational material every day. Your chosen school can also give you their program schedule.

DT – Driver Training (Behind-the-wheel)

Your child should complete 6 hours of actual training behind the wheel, but it should not be more than 2 hours per day. Observation time is not counted within the DT time. If your child is trained in a secondary school, more time will be needed. You should find it out with the school.

One or More Students for DT

It is possible to give DT training to more than one student. If you or your teenager are uncomfortable with this, you can request the school to provide individual training.

Female or Male Instructor

You can choose amongst these according to your preference and comfort level.

Parent’s Attendance During DT Training

Though a parent’s attendance is not legally banned during the DT training, it depends on the driving school to allow you during the training or not. So, you will have to check whether you can accompany your teenager during the training or not.

Other Things to Check

Other important things you can check are whether the school offers pick-up and drop-off at your preferred locations, whether the vehicles pass through Safety Inspection, what type of vehicles are used for training and whether they are insured.
