Is IB School the Right Choice for Your Child?

When it comes to the education, many parents are willing to do and pay more than they afford to get the best for their children. Sometimes, however, it is crucial to make the right choice because not every school will be good for every child. If you are considering, for instance, IB schools in Dubai or elsewhere, yet you are not certain whether it is going to be the best option for your children, I will try to help you decide.

Is IB (International Baccalaureate) school right for your child? Firstly, it depends on the way a child learns. IB classes usually do not involve teacher-led lectures and taking notes, but working on group and individual projects whereas teachers are facilitating. An IB class is very challenging, because students are required to organize and complete projects, to take initiative and publicly present the results of their projects in front of their classmates. If your child likes having options when it comes to choosing research topics and finding the right way to present them, IB school might be the right choice for them. Also, it is good to know that IB schools tend to be very time-consuming. For that reason, children with more demanding extracurricular tasks (playing an instrument, a sport…) usually don’t have enough time and energy for IB schools.

One more thing to take into consideration is the fact that IB schools insist on asking questions and looking for answers, even when the subject is rather controversial. Questions on any topic are up for debate in which students, among other things, learn to understand the cultural biases which do exist in arguments. In some cases these discussions might “hurt” your family’s belief system, so keep that in mind when taking an IB program into consideration.

Finally, not every school offers the same form and quality of IB. Before making a final decision, make sure you take those differences into account too.
